It’s that time of year when the calendar is awash with long lists, short lists and literary prize announcements.
One of the most exciting prizes is the newly relaunched Sunday Times/Peters Fraser & Dunlop Young Writer of the Year Award 2015, which recognises the best literary work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry by a British or Irish writer aged 35 and under. The winner receives £5,000, while the three runners-up get £500 each.
Previous winners have included Zadie Smith (for White Teeth in 2001) and William Fiennes (for the The Snow Geese in 2003).
This year’s shortlist comprises four very different books:
- Ben Fergusson: The Spring of Kasper Meier, a critically acclaimed historical fiction debut
- Sarah Howe: Loop of Jade, a poetic exploration of heritage and identity
- Sunjeev Sahota: The Year of the Runaways, his Man Booker shortlisted second novel
- Sara Taylor: The Shore, a Baileys-nominated collection of interlinked short stories
Thanks to FMcM Associates, the PR firm looking after publicity for the prize, I’m lucky enough to have a signed set of the shortlisted titles to offer as a special competition prize for one lucky reader of this blog.
To enter the prize draw, simply leave a comment below by 6pm on Friday 27 November. I’ll then select a winner at random using a random number generator.
Please note: you can only enter if you live in the UK or Ireland.
In the meantime, if you live in London, you might like to attend a special free Foyles event on Monday 23 November with three of the shortlisted authors and three previous winners, who will be in conversation with Sunday Times literary editor Andrew Holgate. You can find out more here.
UPDATE — FRIDAY 27 NOVEMBER
I used an online random number generator to select a winner. The number chosen was 2. That means the winner is ORANGEPEKOEREVIEWS — congratulations! I’ll be in touch soon to find out your mailing address.. Thanks to everyone who entered — and commiserations if you missed out.
Would love to win these!
