Book giveaway: win Richard Flanagan’s backlist

Many of you will know that Richard Flanagan is one of my favourite authors. Indeed, he’s listed on my favourite authors page, where he’s been quietly sitting (not literally, of course) ever since I read The Sound of One Hand Clapping (the second novel of his that I had read, after Gould’s Book of Fish) way back in 2008. That particular novel left a lasting impression (indeed, some times I still think about it), and I’ve followed his career ever since.

I haven’t reviewed all his books on this blog (I was so stunned by his Booker Prize-winning The Narrow Road to the Deep North that I simply couldn’t find the words to do it justice here), but I have read them all and done my fair share of championing his work on social media and elsewhere. So I was delighted (and honoured) to be commissioned to write a guide to his backlist for the Penguin website. That guide went online this morning — you can read it here — to coincide with the news that all of Flanagan’s backlist has been acquired and repackaged in the UK by Vintage Publishing.

The exciting news is that I have a complete set of those books to give away on this blog to one lucky reader. That’s five rather glorious, if very different, novels: Death of a River Guide, The Sound of One Hand Clapping, Gould’s Book of Fish: A Novel in Twelve Fish, The Unknown Terrorist and Wanting.

To enter the prize draw, simply leave a comment below naming one of your favourite authors. The draw closes at 7pm GMT on Friday 3 June. I’ll then select the winner at random using a random number generator or some such.

Please note that because I’ll be paying the postage (and this is a hefty pile of books), the competition is only open to entrants with a UK address. Please note you can only enter once. Multiple entrants will be disqualified.

  10. Would love to read these, and what great new cover designs. David Mitchell is my favourite author… any similarities style-wise?

    1. Hmmm… good question. I’ve only read two of Mtichell’s novels, so I’m not sure I could make a comparison. But I can say that Flanagan is quite unlike anyone else I’ve read. He has a style all of his own.

  13. I loved The Narrow Road to the Deep North and your reading guide has made me want to read his entire backlist. As for a favourite author – an impossible question but having just finished Our Souls at Night, Kent Haruf is certainly up there.

  14. I’m loving Iain Pears at the moment..getting stuck into Stones Fall. I’ve only ever read The Narrow Road to the Deep North, which was wonderful…so please add me to the hat!

  15. I too have struggled to make any coherent comments on The Narrow Road. It’s the first book I’ve read by Flanagan but wont be the last (I have Goulds Book of Fish on the shelf ready) so would love to be lucky with this giveaway. Favourite author? Tough question for me to narrow it down to just one particularly for contemporary authors. Classic authors would be easier – for me its George Eliot

  16. The person that springs to mind is Hannah Kent, I have just finished her debut novel Burial Rites which is a fascinating story based on the true story of the last women to be executed in Iceland. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to read her second book when it comes out

  18. How unoriginal of me to suggest…..Richard Flanagan (no surprise as that’s how I ended up finding this page and competition!).
    Stunning, original and thoughtful stories, which can be re-read endlessly.

    Also admire Spalding Gray, (although he was a performer / actor who told stories rather than a straight writer), John Updike and David Mitchell.

  19. At the moment I am all in on AS Partic because I am so thrilled with his MF Prize shortlist nomination! For something rather different, I’ve enjoyed all of Marina Lewycka’s novels.

  21. The extraordinary Narrow Road to the Deep North is one of my favourite novels. If I had to name a favourite author, it would have to be Stoner author John Williams.
