Earlier today, the shortlist for the 2023 Stella Prize was announced.
The titles, in alphabetical order by author’s surname, are as follows:
- We Come With This Place by Debra Dank (Echo Publishing)
- big beautiful female theory by Eloise Grills (Affirm Press)
- The Jaguar by Sarah Holland-Batt (University of Queensland Press)
- Hydra by Adriane Howell (Transit Lounge)
- Indelible City by Louisa Lim (Text Publishing)
- Bad Art Mother by Edwina Preston (Wakefield Press)
Each of the shortlisted authors receives $4,000; the winner will get $60,000.
Typically, I have not read any of the books on the shortlist, although Hydra and We Come With This Place — purchased after the longlist was announced — are both in my TBR. A library reservation of The Jaguar came through yesterday, so that’s lying in wait, too.
Not sure my other reservations for the remaining three books will come through in time for me to read the entire shortlist before the winner is announced on Thursday 27 April – but I’ll see what I can do.
You can read more about the shortlist on the official website and see what the Guardian had to say about it here.

It’s doesn’t seem like a long time for you to be able to read the entire shortlist…
(I’m not going to try, I’m sticking to reading novels and NF, I am tired of memoirs.)
I’ve done it before. I can read two books a week, but I doubt I’ll be able to get all the books in time. Bad Art Mother is temporarily unavailable … looks like they’re doing another print run.
I could send you my copy if you like.
That’s very generous of you, but the mail to WA from Melbourne can sometimes take 6 weeks! I’ve given up ordering anything online cos it takes so long to get here. I have it reserved at the library and will check shelves of local stores on weekend.
Gosh, six weeks, I guess that’s for parcel post…
Let me know if you change your mind!
I’ve been waiting for Bad Art Mother to arrive at work, with all the changes we’ve had recently with our operating system, I had forgotten to follow up why it wasn’t here yet – know I know thanks 🙂
I’ve discovered you can buy digital version from the Wakefield website, so if my library reserve doesn’t come through in time then I have a Plan B

I have three in my possession – Bad Art Mother, Hydra, and Indelible City – but unlikely to finish them before the winner is announced as I’ll be away for much of April (yay!) and not on the kind of holidays where I sit around and read!
Enjoy your holiday. I’m not jealous! At all. No. Never.
